May
May has arrived! The month where flowers bloom, allergies attack, and calendars suddenly fill up with graduations, recitals, cookouts, and that one event you forgot until five minutes before it starts.
In all the busyness, 1 John reminds us of something simple but powerful: Walk in the light. Love one another. Stay rooted in Christ. That sounds peaceful… until you try to do it during a hectic May schedule. But maybe that’s exactly the point.
Faith isn’t just for quiet mornings and calm moments, it’s for the car rides, the crowded days, the missed alarms, and yes… even the slightly burned casseroles. Especially the casseroles.
It’s also the month where we confidently say things like, “Things will slow down soon.”(They will not.)
And right in the middle of all this joyful chaos comes “Mother’s Day” …a time to honor the women who somehow held life together when we were actively trying to fall apart.
Let’s be honest: mothers deserve far more than one Sunday a year. These are the people who find those missing shoes that were “definitely not in my room,” Knew where everything was… except maybe five minutes of peace and quiet. Mothers could hear a whisper from three rooms away but somehow slept through their own alarm. Mothers mastered the phrase: “Because I said so,” which, as it turns out, is a perfectly valid theological argument.
Mothers have a spiritual gift that isn’t listed in 1 Corinthians, but probably should be: the ability to do ten things at once while remembering something you forgot three days ago. And if we’re really honest, many of us didn’t fully appreciate our mothers until we tried to do even half of what they did. Suddenly, we understand why they said things like: “Money doesn’t grow on trees,” “You’ll understand someday,” and “Don’t make me turn this car around.”
A word of encouragement and a mild warning! As Mother’s Day approaches, here are a few gentle reminders:
Call your mom (before she calls you first and says, “I was beginning to wonder…”)
If you’re buying flowers, don’t wait until Saturday night at 8:59 PM.
If you’re cooking, remember, smoke alarms are not part of the recipe,
And if you forgot Mother’s Day entirely… well, we believe in grace, but we also believe in consequences.
We also recognize that Mother’s Day can be joyful for some and tender for others. Whether you’re celebrating, remembering, missing, or reflecting—know that you are seen, loved, and held in God’s care.
Just a closing thought… May is a beautiful reminder that growth takes time. Flowers don’t bloom overnight, and neither does faith.
So wherever you are this month…busy, blessed, or just trying to find your keys, remember that God is still at work. Even in the chaos. Even in you.
Grace and peace,
Pastor B
