“September: The Month When Everything Starts… Again”

If you listen closely, you can already hear it. Not the sound of geese migrating… Not the rustling of leaves beginning to turn… No, it’s the sound of parents whispering hallelujah under their breath because school is back in session.

But there’s also a wonderful energy in the air. People come back from summer trips with stories, sunburns, and at least one souvenir they regret buying. Kids return to school with new clothes and backpacks, and the kind of enthusiasm that lasts until approximately mid‑October.

September is that magical month when life resets itself. Routines return. In my house, it’s the sound of college football starting again and hoping, just hoping, this is my LSU Tigers year to make the playoffs.

September in the church is a bit like opening your refrigerator after vacation. You’re not entirely sure what’s in there, but you know you need to deal with it. Ministries start back up, Bible studies return, and someone inevitably asks, “When does the Christmas program planning begin?” (Please pray for your pastor.)

September is the month when we all believe, truly believe, that this year we will be more organized. We’ll keep our calendars updated. We’ll remember our commitments. And then October arrives and reminds us that sanctification is a process.

But seriously, September often feels like a season of fresh beginnings. Summer routines give way to school schedules, church activities resume, and our calendars quickly fill. In the middle of this transition, God invites us not merely to become busier, but to become more deeply rooted in Him.

The words of Isaiah offer encouragement for the season ahead: "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength." - Isaiah 40:31

Our strength doesn’t come from having everything organized or knowing exactly what the coming months will bring. It comes from placing our hope in the Lord. When life feels hurried, we can pause to pray. When responsibilities seem heavy, we can lean on God's grace. When the future is uncertain, we can remember that God is already present there.

September is also a wonderful time to reconnect with our church family. Worship, fellowship, service, and study help us grow together and remind us that faith was never meant to be lived alone. Each person brings gifts, experiences, and encouragement that enrich the whole congregation.

As we enter this new season, consider choosing one simple spiritual intention: set aside a regular time for prayer, join a Bible study, encourage someone who is struggling, serve in a ministry, or invite a neighbor to church. Small acts of faithfulness can become powerful ways for God to work in us and through us.

May this month be more than a return to routine. May it be a season of renewed faith, meaningful connection, and joyful service as we follow Christ together.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for the gift of a new season. Renew our strength, guide our steps, and help us make room for You in the midst of our busy lives. Draw us closer to You and to one another, and use us to share Your love with our community. Amen
